4 Major Challenges Of Running Microfinance Banks

Speaking of the Nigerian business environment, running a Microfinance business can be a highly profitable and importantly can also be a huge challenge.

There are many obstacles, problems and threats which could both slow down or even stifle your success in the business.

For instance;

1. Internal Bank Fraud

While the CBN, EFCC, NDIC, NDLEA and the police have played crucial roles in limiting internal fraud in many Microfinance bodies, there are still instances of where bank staff make away with depositors funds.

Some Microfinance banks have even folded up because a director made away with huge sums of money under various pretext.

This is a reality which still happens till date.

2. Loan Defaults from some Customers

In comparison to commercial banks MFBs tend to record less loan defaults.

Sometimes Farmers, petty traders and artisans who are less educated seem more likely to repay a loan than a formal business run by educated people, depending on determining factors.

But there are indications that loan defaults among Nigerian microfinance have been on the increase year on year by very small margins.

Loan defaulting has a way of frustrating revolving loan schemes which in turn can discourage further savings.

3. Misapplication of Loans

Some people will approach a bank to raise a loan for their business but divert it to pay house rent, splash on wedding or cater to another non-business need which could lead to them either not repaying the loan or taking longer than they should.

4. Mini Commercial Bank Syndrome

A newspaper report quoting the CEO of an Microfinance noted how many MFBs in Nigeria are struggling to stay afloat.

In fact most of them are close to closing down as over 40% of the entire market is captured by just 10 out of 991 existing MFBs.

This was attributed to ‘mini commercial bank syndrome’ where the MFBs function like commercial banks and target more of middle level customers than low income earners and micro businesses.

According to the CEO when you neglect the core microfinance practice you are heading for insolvency which most Micro Finance Banks in Nigeria are currently doing.

Setting up a Microfinance Bank offers great Returns

You can actually start a microfinance bank in Nigeria with about N10 million operating from just one unit location within a state.

Alternatively, you can startup as a state Micro Finance with  about N50 to N100 million startup capital or N1 billion for national Microfinance bank.

The return on investment (if you manage the business well) can be as high as 30% and this can be realized by your 3rd t 4th year.

Your first year is capable of generating over 20% ROI.

Setting up a Microfinance in Nigeria has stringent requirements but they are not too difficult for serious minded individuals who want to invest in it.

Secondly while the market is growing, there are challenges to deal with and but sound management practices can handle most of them.

Have a good time.

3 Reasons To Setup A Microfinance Bank In Nigeria

Microfinance banks as we have them today evolved from pre-2000 community banks and cooperative societies which carried out informal financial services to the benefit of low income, rural dwellers who were too far from accessing retail banking services from commercial banks or earned too little to even be worth saving or approaching them for loans.
The Central Bank of Nigeria saw this situation and noticed that despite the huge acceptance of the Esusu System (local/informal revolving, interest free loan scheme) was very well received in Nigeria only a few corporate organization were tapping into this.
Nigeria’s rural poor cumulatively could generate over N280 billion in savings annually (as at  around 2005) and cheap access to loans and other business funding meant a lot of people could move out of poverty as they fund their micro businesses – especially rural subsistence farmer, petty traders, artisans, low income salary earners and other unskilled labour.
1. Huge demand for affordable Loans to Micro, Small and Medium sized Businesses
The number of small and medium sized businesses in the economy that need finance to fund their operations but are unable to do so is really huge.
Less than 54% of Nigerians have bank accounts and interestingly many of these people not captured own farms, run small sized commercial ventures and have their eyes set on doing bigger business which without additional funding they will be unable to do.
At least over N500 billion is requested for by SMEs annually but less than N300 billion is granted.

2. Increase in Population of SME Businesses Captured in the Formal Sector
More hitherto informal businesses are migrating into the formal sector.
For instance, small food retailers like 5 years ago would have grown into medium sized businesses employing from a few to dozens of employees.
These employees would somehow need to be captured in a payroll system which would require documentation.
The business would need to start paying taxes, pensions etc.
But this same business may be better served by a microfinance bank which is closer and more compatible than a commercial bank.

3. Microfinance Banks are strong drivers of savings among low income earners
Many low income earners may be know the benefits of savings but microfinance banks offer greater services in mobilizing them to save than commercial banks.
Low income earners who prefer Esusu scheme for target savings are more likely to patronize an MFB than a commercial bank to open and operate a savings account - the reason being that savings can be a major source of credit and financing to them, which commercial banks are less likely to deliver on.

The future of Microfinance in Nigeria will likely improve as more people in the informal sector have increased access to financial services.

The Business Of Selling Knowledge Via Paid E-Classes And Teleseminars

If you have some special skill or knowledge to share with others, then teaching people via E- Classes or Teleseminars could be a great business for you.

You might wonder: “Why should I sell my knowledge in one those formats instead of, say, writing it all down into an ebook?”

- There are several reasons.

First, these alternative formats allow for much greater speed in terms of how long it takes to get your product to the market.

This is especially true with teleseminars.

For example, let's say you have a real talent for speaking 'off the cuff'.

You could sit down for just an hour two to create basic teleseminar outline, then improvise off of that.

Your product creates itself the moment you begin the call.

You can even sell an audio recording or transcript of the call after the fact for extra profit.

Also, teleseminars are easy to set up.

There are many services which will host your teleseminar for free (see resources below).

All you have to do is market the call effectively so you can get an audience to sign up for it.

E-Classes are also quite simple to set up. You can create your content in advance, or just create on course module at a time as you go along through the course schedule.

The E-Class information can be delivered via autoresponder, or even on your website.

Now, here's the other thing about these two methods.

“You can charge much more for the information than you’d for an ebook”

E-courses and teleseminars have a higher perceived value in the minds of most people.

Where you might get away charging $97 for an e-book, you could charge $197 or more for an
e-class.

And that's not all...you can also set things up so that you get paid a huge, lump sum before your class is even created.

Let's say you have a sizable opt-in list. You mail the list to let them know about your e-class or teleseminar, and you request payment and registration in advance.

Maybe you get 10 people to register and pay you $197 for an e-class that begins 2 weeks away.

You've just made $1970 at one whack, and you haven't even sat down to create the course content yet.

This many times works like gangbusters.

- Sounds Good, But How Do I Get Started?

First step:

Determine what you have to offer, and what niche your knowledge fits into.

Give yourself the benefit of the doubt, and don't feel like you have to have specialized, 'professional' knowledge.

You probably have a lot to offer just based on your life experience.

Maybe you are an expert at:

• Getting out of debt quickly?
• Living on a budget, and finding bargains?
• Losing weight?
• Cooking healthy Italian meals?
• Flipping real estate?
• Dealing with a chronic health condition?
• Surviving graduate school?
• Healing relationships?
• Feng Shui?
• Auto repair?
• Traveling Europe for free?
• Restoring old furniture?

You get the idea. Anything you know how to do that others would find useful is fair game.

If you’re not an expert at anything (which is highly unlikely), then you can make it even easier by interviewing industry experts within your niche.

Everyone loves to be interviewed and if your sales pitch is good enough, your potential joint venture partner will bite.

The best part about interviews is often, you don’t even need to create the content as it will be provided by the interviewee.

You just need to provide an outline and facilitate the teleseminar.

Second step:

Decide which format works best for the information.

If you've got a lot of ground to cover, and you need to make use of visual aids, you're probably better of doing an E-Class.

You can split things up into as many weeks or months as needed.

You can also split information across multiple teleseminars, but most of the time I think you'll find just one or two calls will be enough for most subjects.

It really depends on how much detail you plain on going into, whether you want to hold question and answer sessions with your audience, etc.

Third step:
Create a basic template for presentation.

Create at least the first one to two modules of your e-class, if that's the route your taking – that way, you can get started on marketing asap instead of waiting until you have everything written.

If you're holding a teleseminar, create an outline of the topics to be covered.

Also, you need to determine whether you'll need a co-host to help stimulate the discussion.

Your co-host will, in essence, be interviewing you and helping you stay on topic.

Otherwise, if you go it alone, you might feel like your just giving a speech via telephone.

Fourth Step:
Determine your marketing strategy.

How will you get people to register for your e-class or signup for your teleseminar?

There are two quick ways to do this. The fastest way is to seek out joint venture partners to
help promote you.

And if you’re interviewing someone as described in step two, you could get this same person to promote for you.

In other words, you want to find some fellow business people in your niche, and see if they're willing to promote your course or call to their opt-in lists.

You'll need to work out some benefits for them.

For example, if you set up an affiliate program, you can offer them a high commission on course or teleconference referrals.

If they have a complementary product, you could offer to put in a plug for that product in your course or during the call.

A second method, somewhat slower, is to set up your website and opt-in list, and start collecting subscribers.

You'd want to set up a landing page that encourages people to sign up to find out about the course or teleconference.

Here's some sample copy for that, just to clarify how this would work:

Is That Ragged, Old Sofa Blocking the Flow of Wealth Into Your Life? (headline)

It could be. At least, according to the ancient Chinese wisdom of Feng Shui.

Feng what??

Feng Shui. If you haven't heard of it before, feng shui is the art of positioning objects like furniture and decorations in your home, as well as positioning certain “power colors” in key places.

The heart of the process comes down to balancing “Yin” energy and “Yang” energy.

There are all sorts of crazy things you wouldn't expect could have an impact on the flow of energy in your life.

For example:

- Having insomnia? Make sure you don't have an abundance of red in your bedroom!

- Money problems? Make sure you always keep the lid to the toilet closed!

- Experiencing conflict? You might have too many sharp edges or objects in your environment.

Balancing the energies in your home can have an enormous impact on your quality of life.

I can help you learn to do just that.

As a feng shui practitioner with over 5 years experience, I've created energy miracles for hundreds of people just like you!

And for a limited time only, I'm bringing my expertise straight to your phone via an exclusive, live, 2 hour teleseminar.

Find out how you can be on the call by signing up below...etc, etc.

It’s as easy as that. You lay out some traditional content bait to get people interested in product, and then get them onto your list, where you can plug the details of the teleseminar or ecourse.

You'll have a ready made audience on your list.

Final Step:
Once you've got your content and promotion strategy lay out, all you need to do is get the technical resources in place.

For E-Classes, you'll want to grab a good autoresponder service like Getresponse, mailchimp, Aweber or a combined autoresponder and hosting service.

Have a Wonderful day.

The Pay-Per-Lead Affiliate Marketing Model For Profit

Under this model, you generate commissions by generating leads (also called Cost Per Action – CPA  for those using these services). Rather than referring people directly to a product, you refer them to product information.

Let me give you some examples to clarify this...
Common Types of Pay-Per-Lead Offers:
• Refer prospect to a mortgage refinance company, where he fills out a form to get pre-qualifying information about potential loans.
• Refer prospect to a health company offering free vitamin samples in exchange for filling out a contact form.
• Refer prospect to a trial version of a product or service
You see, the prospect is not making a purchase in any of these cases. Instead, he's getting free stuff. The freebie might be a sample of a product, a trial or just an information request. In any case, you get paid for generating that lead. Now, you must be careful in the types of pay-per-lead program you promote. Always make sure that your merchant collects lead information ethically and unobtrusively. This means that your prospect shouldn't have to take too many steps in order to get what he wants. Filling out a simple form or two is the most it should take. The better the offers and the easier they are to complete, the more you'll build a reputation for quality, and for protecting your prospects' privacy.  You have some leeway when it comes to promoting pay-per-lead programs because the imperative towards pre-selling is not as strong (we'll talk more about why in a moment). This means you can promote your programs through 'simple' methods, like:

• Direct links to the merchant via Adwords, Blogs, Classifieds

As well as use the more involved method of collecting leads and publishing a newsletter.
Also, in most cases, a lot of your work will be focused on driving as much traffic as possible through your links for as long the merchant is running the pay-per-lead program. Some merchants run them all the time, while others set them up only for limited-time special offers. The real key here is to know how to best position the offer. Pay-per-lead is trickier because, often, there's only so much you can say.
Whereas as a traditional product would offer you ample opportunity to generate follow up content like special reports, e-courses and the like, a pay-per-lead offer just isn't suited to that level of detail.
At the heart of the matter is that the pre-selling tactics you'll need to use will be opportunity- focused, rather than benefits-focused. Ok, So What Do I Do…?
“One of the most common approaches to pay-per-lead marketing is the freebies website or freebies newsletter”
This is a scatter-shot approach which allows you to promote a variety of unrelated programs under the guise of being a sort of freebies clearing house.
In order to narrow things down to a manageable level, you'd want to create your site or newsletter around some sort of theme, like ‘Top 10 Freebies Per Month’, or ‘Best Internet Free Trials’.
You'd then choose a couple of categories to focus on something like health, computers and finance - and build your website/newsletter around those.
In this sense, you're providing a service as a publisher of hard to find information. Now, if you really want to limit things down to one niche, you'll need to choose high-paying pay-per-lead programs. This means looking into the professional services like financing, debt reduction, attorney referrals, insurance and the like.

 >> Commission Junction ( http://www.cj.com ) has many of those.
Those niches will allow you room to publish more content.
What you'd do is set up a content-focused website or newsletter, and concentrate your efforts on publishing educational articles. For example, let's say that you're promoting a life insurance pay-per-lead program. What types of content would you use?
• Articles about choosing a life insurance policy, estate planning, reviews of different
insurance providers.
• Interviews with experts in the field
• Quizzes that help people determine their overall health and life expectancy
• Useful tools – maybe a life insurance calculator that helps people compare plans side-by-side to see how much they'll spend for a $1 million policy over X numbers of years with Company A versus Company B
Now, in order to monetize this, you'd need to place your affiliate link in as many places on site (and in every newsletter) as possible. For example, at the end of each article, you would have a hyper-linked text-ad saying: “Need life insurance? Get a free quote in under 5 minutes”. You would also benefit from using well-placed banner ads across the site.  All the Best.

6 Factors To Consider When Building Customer Profiles

 1. Affinity profiling – analyzes current buying habits to better match customer to product.

Knowing what kinds of product a particular customer is buying gives you the ability to build an “affinity matrix” showing what related products would stimulate more sales from him/her.

2. Demographic and psychographic data is also used for profiling.

Demographics tells you a client is a 29-year-old, unmarried, male who earns $45,000 and drives a 2-year old Lexus.

Psychographic data suggests that single young men who buy status-symbol cars are excellent prospects for other highly visible status products.

Combining the two types of data yields a customer profile to someone marketing, say, the latest cellular phone.

 3. Lifestyle Coding is used to enhance basic demographic information.  Simply put – people in certain demographic categories will likely have similar hobbies and other interests.

4.  Mapping is another useful tool in building customer profiles.

Census data, topographic information, geographic coordinates, and zip code+4 postal data can be fed into a computer yielding maps that can be color coded to certain characteristics of consumers in particular neighborhoods.

  5.   Cluster Coding is a popular means of grouping people by lifestyle characteristics.

Remember hearing the terms “Urban Up-and-Comers, Settled In, and White Picket Fence” used to describe market segments?

These are known as “clusters”, each given a score according to affluence, social position, activities, and aspirations.

  6.  Survey data – can be used to enhance demographic, lifestyle, and other data to build a profile.

This is collected directly from your customers via application forms, surveys, and credit histories.

This provides a more personal portrait of the customer than merely census or demographic data.

The Direct Marketer of today has become more of a “surgeon” than a “shotgun hunter”.

It’s no longer cost-effective to shoot at 400,000 prospects to get 40,000 clients, and with computers it’s easier to slice-and-dice data today.

14 Tips For Using Facebook And Twitter For Online Advocacy

Facebook

    1. Keep Facebook posts short and conversational, and include an image whenever possible.

2. The most effective way to utilize your Facebook account is to post regularly.

3. A general rule to follow could be to post at least one Facebook post a day, but the more you engage your audience, the better off you will be.

 4. Ask people to share your content through Facebook. Make sure the content is branded with a logo so that we are credited when it is shared.

5. Include links on Facebook to direct people back to the state and national  websites.

6. Share content from the Facebook page and  Action Fund Facebook page.

 7. You can easily create events on your Facebook page and invite your Facebook friends, who can then invite their friends, and so on.

8. Consider creating a Facebook event to advertise events such as your branch meetings, rallies, and lobby days.

Twitter

   9. Share links to press releases, images from events, and other information in 140 characters or less.

 10.  Tweet directly to members of the media and bloggers to encourage them to cover your efforts.

11.  Tweet directly to local organizations that you want to partner with in your efforts or that might be able to help you spread the word.

12. Tweet directly to members of Congress with the action you want them to take.

13.   Use hashtags, such as #Business #Quotes etc., related to what you are trying to publicize.

  14. Include links to your positions on priority issues and to your state website.

4 General Principles For Using Social Media

1. Be genuine: Let your personality show, use humor, and be transparent about who is posting content.
Try not to simply broadcast; rather, when possible, speak as an individual, to individuals. This will help grant you credibility as a trusted source.

 2. Stay focused:  The people and organizations that follow you on social media have certain expectations about the type of content you post and the way in which you engage with them.

If you stray too far from your objectives, you will lose the trust and attention of your community.

3. Be reliable: Share quality content from trusted sources, and avoid amplifying erroneous messages from unreliable sources.

Reliability also means posting to your social media services regularly. Frequently sharing reliable, meaningful content helps establish you as an important source of information and ideas for your community.

  4.  Get social: Above all else, social media is about conversation.

Share and comment on other people’s or organizations’ posts to start new conversations, and join in the conversations that are occurring on your social media pages.

The more you engage with your followers, the more they will understand that your priorities are their priorities too.

Some helpful key points to note.

1. Social media is a conversation, not a monologue.

2.   Create a strategy for using social media as part of your advocacy efforts.

3.  The most effective way to utilize your social media accounts is to post regularly.

4.  Be genuine. Let the personality of show when posting something on social media.

Have a nice day.

5 Tips To Creating Social Media Strategy

An important step in utilizing social media is to create a strategy, now creating a strategy includes the following:
   1. Setting your objectives. Is your goal narrow (publicizing an event) or broad (building and engaging with a community or coalition)?

  2.  Identifying the audience you would like to reach.

3. Are you primarily communicating with people who are already familiar with you and your work, such as your members and volunteers?

Or are you reaching out to men or women you’ve identified as potential members and supporters? selecting the social media platforms you plan to focus on.

This decision should be guided by your objectives and intended audience.

The most well-known and easy-to-use are Facebook and Twitter, so if you only plan to utilize one or two platforms, we recommend focusing on those.

  4. Gathering resources and materials to share through social media.

    5. Appointing someone or a team of people to manage your social media presence.

Although there are no prerequisites for using social media, individuals with backgrounds in communications, marketing, or public relations can be great assets.

You’ll also want to select someone who is comfortable and familiar with technology. Have a nice day.

The Art Of Getting Into Negotiation

Whether you are buying or selling real estate, you need to do the right talking to the right people in order to get the best deal.

Being or using a negotiator is the best way to make sure that you know exactly what is going on and are able to fall into the right piece of property.

Whether you are a negotiator or working with someone who negotiates, you will want to make sure that you walk into a home with your facts straight.
The first thing to do as a negotiator or to look for in a negotiator is to make sure the facts are there.

You will need to know going rates, real estate investments and the market, the trends that are in place, and what facts will be best for the properties that are being looked at.

Of course, this will mean that you want to spend time to find the right deal and the right piece of property.

Whether you are an individual looking for property, or are working with a negotiator, make sure that your individual needs come first.

If you are working with or as a negotiator, you want to make sure that they have your best interests in mind.

Often times, negotiators will try to sell someone on a deal just so they can receive commission.

This is not necessarily a good way to negotiate or find a deal.

Everyone should walk away feeling like they won with the investment in the property.

This starts with finding the right information and ends with making and signing the right contract.

If you are interested in real estate or just want to work with a negotiator, make sure that they fit your description of a good sales person to work with.

This will make a large difference in the property that you invest in as well as a difference in your ability to have your individual needs met.

Have a wonderful day.
